How to Compress Images Online Without Losing Quality
Large images slow down websites, fill up phone storage, and clog email inboxes. Smart compression reduces file size dramatically while keeping images looking sharp.
What is Image Compression?
Image compression reduces file size by discarding data that the human eye can't easily detect. There are two types:
- Lossy compression — Permanently removes some image data. JPG uses this method. Reduces size by 60–80% with minimal visible quality change.
- Lossless compression — No data is lost. PNG compression works this way.
How to Compress Images Online
- Open the [Image Compressor](/tools/image-compressor) tool.
- Upload your images (JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF).
- Set your target quality level.
- Download the compressed images or a ZIP file.
How Much Can Images Be Compressed?
Typical results:
- JPG photos — 60–80% reduction at 80% quality with virtually no visible difference
- PNG screenshots — 10–30% reduction losslessly; up to 70% if converted to JPG
- WebP — Already efficient, but 20–40% additional compression is often possible
Best Practices for Web Images
- Target under 200 KB for most web images.
- Use WebP format where possible — it's 25–35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality.
- Match image dimensions to display size — Don't serve a 3000px wide image that displays at 600px.
Batch Compression
Upload multiple images at once and download them all in a ZIP file.
